As a reader of thrillers, murder mysteries, horror and the occasional historical novel, I'm not sure why I originally picked up a book in this author's first series. Perhaps it was on sale. And I am a quilter. But once I started reading I was hooked. Her writing is so engaging that within a few pages of this novel I found myself kneeling beside Sarah as she planted herbs, vegetables and medicinal flowers in her quilt shaped garden. I don't read romances, and I don't read Chrisitan fiction. But there is no getting around the fact that Adina Senft writes Christian romances, and I do read her books. The fellowship of the characters in her books is both heartwarming and inspiring. While reading her books I am filled with a sense of peace. Her books restore my faith, if not in a higher power, then in the goodness of others. This book, and her others in the Amish quilt series remind us of the basic tenets shared by so many religions on how we should treat one another. And her books remind us that many people follow those ideals whether they worship at a church or not. So contrary to what we see in the news, people are basically good. And we can all take comfort in that message.Tags : Herb of Grace: A Healing Grace Novel [Adina Senft] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. After a slow start, this book draws you in to the main character, Sarah, and her gift of healing other people, whether it be ailments or their hearts... Read on to discover a lovely story of the gifts of health...
Sarah is a widow struggling to make ends meet. Ruth from the Sisters quilting session suggested she become a Healer. She prayed about it and agreed that that may be why she enjoyed learning about herbs from her mother.
I love the morally clean Amish novels which tell a good story. This is definitely a good one that reminds me of common problems of trying to raise good children among modern temptations. The ending left several themes unfinished making me want to continue the series.
I enjoyed the characters and was really into the story, but I was a bit frustrated that the book ended with no resolution for any part of the plot. It is like the author wrote half the book to sell now, and will sell the other half later.
It has been a while since I read this book so I can't give a complete review. It is part of a series and I thoroughly enjoyed each one. I loved the lessons about using herbs and "weeds" in healing. The romance and mystery of the story were pretty much predictable but well written.
This the first book I have read of Adina Senft and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Widow Sarah is trying to raise two teenage sons, tend to her garden so they will have food to eat and then her friend Ruth wants her to learn to become a herbal healer. Sarah is concern it will take her away from her family too much but situations make her think God might be sending her in that direction. On top of all this she has a new English neighbor that her younger son spends a lot of time with. Too much Sarah thinks. This book is a very smooth reading which puts you inside the book which I love. You become involved in all the different stories and characters. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Herb of Grace by Adina Senft is a sweet and lovely novel. Sarah Yoder is a widow with two sons, Simon and Caleb. Her husband, Michael, has been gone for five years. Sarah sells herbs at the local Amish market in town as well as to Ruth Lehman, an herbal healer. Ruth suggests that Sarah learn how to be a Dokterfraa (herbal healer) as a way to earn money. Sarah is good with herbs and Ruth thinks that she will be a natural. Sarah is not sure if she will have the time and decides to pray about the situation.
Henry Byler left the Amish community over twenty years ago. He has just inherited his Aunt Sadie’s farm. He has returned but is not sure about staying. Caleb introduces himself to Henry as soon as he arrives in the hopes of finding work. Caleb is very outgoing and straightforward. Caleb finds out that Henry is a potter and shows Henry around the Amish market.
Henry then meets Sarah who asks him about some little pots for her herbs. Slowly they start getting to know each other, but despite the attraction they can only be friends. Sarah is a member of the Old Order Amish community and Henry is not (nor does he have any intention of joining). Sarah suppresses her feelings for Henry and tries to keep things friendly between them.
Sarah is having trouble with her son, Simon. Simon wants to go to Colorado, but Sarah thinks he is too young to go off. Simon is only seventeen and Sarah relies on him. Priscilla Mast likes Simon and keeps trying to get him to notice her. Will Simon obey his mother or will his desire to travel get the best of him?
Will Sarah become a Dokterfraa? What will Henry decide to do? Will Henry’s pottery be well received? Read Herb of Grace (I also discovered that herb of grace is a folk name for rue) to find out the answers. I really enjoyed this story and did not want it to end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Keys of Heaven. I give Herb of Grace 5 out of 5 stars. Herb of Grace is such a beautiful book to read.
