Wow, I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Olivia Parker being a new author to me. But it was delightful, perfectly paced with ALL THE FEELS. Well mostly it was the romance and chemistry of the main characters that made this a 5 star for me.

Madalyn is somewhat bad ton, with her part American lineage. But more critically, she is too loud, too plump, too clumsy, a bit too plain and WAY too plain spoken to do well in society (particularly according to her step mother).

The scene opens as a number of debutants are invited to an exclusive bride hunt event at the Duke’s country residence - not a hunt for the Duke (Gabriel) but the duke’s younger brother and heir. Madelyn thinks this bride hunt to be the height of conceit and arrogance and unknowingly says so to Gabriel not realizing he IS the Duke or that she has caught his eye. However Madelyn does get invited to the hunt and agrees to go for twofold reasons: to keep an eye on her best friend who is unrequitedly in love with the Duke’s younger brother and because her evil step mother has promised to allow her to live in the last place Madelyn was happiest (a small cottage near the Duke’s country residence where she had lived as a child with her mother before her mother’s death) if she goes along with her plans.

Gabriel thinks he wants perfection from a woman. Spoiler alert, he doesn’t. He seems to realize that perfection would bore him and thus, since even perfection isn’t enough, he thinks he will never marry and intends his brother to carry in the ducal line. He knows his father broke his mother’s heart and he never wishes to put a woman through the same sort of agony. Nevertheless he can’t stop thinking of the woman who pelted him with a lemon upon first acquaintance. She is nothing like the women he’s been with before or what he thinks he wants. I mean, he likes women with small breasts! (Rolls eyes, really?) And Madelyn is well endowed and not even that pretty (though I know it is a colloquialism I love that he describes her as “cute”). Still, he begins falling hard nearly from the beginning and it is delightful to “watch.”

At the Duke’s residence sparks fly and some of the most explosive kisses occur in various alcoves and private rooms. The money in this book is how well it describes and allows you to feel how Gabriel and Madelyn begin to care and ultimately love each other (perhaps in spite of themselves). Needless to say, the romance and love story takes center stage and you are routing for both to find their happy ending together. I won’t go into more detail because therein lies the beauty of this story so seriously, just read it!

At the Bride Hunt Ball Olivia Parker 9780061355448 Books Reviews

Being different has al!ways been difficult but it is awful for our heroine. She us half foreigner, she is a little clumsy, she speaks her mind and she has always been criticized and feels ugly and stupid. Of course it is predictable that the rakish man will fall in love with her, that is what I want from a romance, and I suppose most other readers want it too. But the way to the Happy End is funny an twisted.
I enjoyed this book and read it in one evening unable to put it down. I immediately bought the other 2 books of Ms Parker. If you want an enjoyable read with a happy story, go for it
I really enjoyed this book, and it had a few hilarious scenes that made me lough out loud, which I always like in my romances. I really liked the plot of a two week "find-a-bride" competition, where our heroine is an unwilling participant (going so far as to run away from the man handing out the invitations) and the hero is the big brother sponsoring the competition for his younger brother. I found the heroine exceedingly endearing with her penchant for disaster and general clumsiness, matched against the hero who knew just what to do to help her find some of her confidence. Romance-wise it was a slow burn for most of the book, but then during the last 30% of the book or so they "connect" and it is yummy. (Side note the hero had a proclivity for standing in the shadows and then grabbing our heroine and ravaging her in dark alcoves...very exciting).
I will definitely re-read this book, and the only reason I rated it four stars instead of five is because there is another book with a very similar plot that I liked a little bit better, "The Bride Price" by Anne Mallory.
I’m finding it hard to write a review for At The Bride Hunt Ball as I'm not sure I could do it justice. It was bloody good and had all the things I absolutely adore in my historical romance reads. I think the humour was the highlight. Then again it could have been the quirky heroine. Some might think it's the hero who steals the show with his straight-laced rules that get thrown out the window once he meets the heroine. We do not have formulaic characters in this story, and while we may see other storylines that are similar, I think the author has an individual voice that would be hard to reproduce and match. This is a story that has been out for years, but my first time reading this author. Thank you to my fellow Goodreads reading group members for bringing this wonderful story to my attention.

All the best-laid plans in the world can’t stop love or physical attraction. To me, that is the lesson to be learned in At The Bride Hunt Ball. I started reading and almost immediately I had Mr Darcy in mind when picturing Gabriel Devine, The Duke of Wolveston. My favourite Mr Darcy is Colin Firth, but in this case, I couldn’t help but picture Matthew Macfadyen when I thought of Gabriel. The Duke has a stiff upper lip, stern visage, with a sensual side just below the surface. Gabriel is a Duke, so, of course, it’s his responsibility to marry well and produce an heir to carry on the name. BUT...Gabriel has no desire to marry. He hatches a plan to marry off his younger brother so he can produce the heir instead. The only problem is, Gabriel doesn’t trust his brother's judgement when it comes to picking a wife, so he and their sister come up with the idea of the bride hunt ball. Now the process of corralling all these lovely young ladies takes time and dedication. Firstly, they must be beautiful. Secondly, they must have style and grace. The one thing they must not do is attract unwanted attention. Well then, how the bloody hell did Madelyn make the cut?

Madelyn has managed to avoid the marriage noose up till now. When she hears about the absurd plan the Devine brothers have thought up, she is quite horrified. How dare they make it a game to find a wife. Why would any woman with a lick of intelligence want to take part in a game like that? Unfortunately, her stepmother couldn’t think of anything better than foisting her off on one of those Devine brothers. Even though the competition is to find a wife for the younger brother Tristan, Priscilla, Madelyn’s stepmother, has her eye on a bigger prize. She thinks Madelyn should be aiming her wiles on Gabriel. Madelyn thinks Priscilla is crazy to believe she has a chance with either of them, especially considering a number of times she’s told she’s ugly, impetuous and a laughingstock. Madelyn tries to talk some sense into Priscilla with no success and she’s unfortunately thrown to the wolves.

Madelyn and Gabriel’s first meeting, and second for that matter are an absolute crack up. Madelyn does a great job of getting Gabriel’s attention, but not in an ideal way. Funny thing is, Gabriel is fascinated with her and is shocked to find out that Madelyn doesn’t see her appeal. No one besides family has been able to make him laugh or even smile like she does. Someone has convinced her that she is unattractive and it doesn’t take long for Gabriel to realise her stepmother is a scheming and nasty woman.

I really enjoyed At The Bride Hunt Ball. It was sweet, funny and sexy. The ending left me with a huge grin on my face and I loved every minute of their journey to happiness. Madelyn gets herself into trouble and finds herself in embarrassing situations regularly. At first, his Grace is horrified but learns to love her faults and all. It was nice to see him realise the gem he had in Madelyn.

I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future.
