My Brother Jack George Johnston Books
This is an Australian classic that for some reason I had not read before. It is superbly written - lyrical and detailed at the same time. It records a time in Australian history that is melancholic and this oozes from the pages. But it ends on a high note, a cliffhanger really, of great promise of things to come.It feels that you are 'there' as Johnston writes about people and places. The characters are real and well portrayed and the story line is gripping. The lines between this book and the lives of George Johnston/ Jack Johnston/ and Charmian Clift are blurry, but that is irrelevant. This book is haunting.Tags : Amazon.com: My Brother Jack (9780207197277): George Johnston: Books,George Johnston,My Brother Jack,Harpercollins Australia,020719727X,G020719727XI3N00,Australian & Oceanian,Literary Collections,Literary Collections Australian & Oceanian,Literature: Classics
My Brother Jack George Johnston Books Reviews
Well written. captured the Australian spirit of the times very well
Very well written. Graphically and accurately depicts Australian life prior, during and after the war years.
i liked this book, so realistic,, could identify with the caractors,, as nice easy read.
This is a beautifully crafted book, it's insightful and describes well the events that shaped Australian attitudes of the time. I'm only half way through it and can't wait to get back to it.
I read this as a younger person. I knew I loved it then and I felt it again this year. This is a book filled with vulnerable, shameful, and proud times from the written in the narrative by George Johnston. The "Brother Jack" is the hero, and loyally presented by Johnston.
This is a great read.
didn't like it
This book describes the growth, both intellectual and emotional of a working class boy, between the wars.
It is as Australian in, scent as boronia in Springtime. Incredibly moving, it moves inexorably through David's
relationships with his father, his friends, his loves and his brother Jack.
Cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Johnson's writing soars.
