Regan Reach eBook Mark G Brewer
I just finished all three books in two days of intense reading. Originally I purchased book one, Reagan's Reach, and it sat on my Kindle in my to be read pile for six weeks until I had nothing more pressing (being happily retired I read five or six books a week). Before I finished this book I had purchased the second. Before I was halfway done with book two I had purchased book three. Do I plan to buy books four and five? Absolutely!
Why did I give it four stars instead of five, the editing. They must not know about apostrophes in New Zealand because I think the only one is in the title. Did this distract? Only a little and did not detract from the story. Are there adult elements? Yes, but if you have lived as long as I have then you probably have some of these memories yourself and I know from experience that today's youth would think nothing of what little sex was included (thank goodness I am still young at heart).
I recommend you at least give the first book a chance although the writing improves with each and the on-going story will grip your imagination.

Regan Reach eBook Mark G Brewer Reviews
I enjoyed the premise of this story, but there were several things that would keep me away from the sequels.
The story kept switching between boardroom politics and Regan's space exploration. I personally found the latter more interesting and had to force myself to read on when it came to the former. Since there are politics involved, a large cast of characters is necessary, but I found it difficult to remember who was who, especially since we don't spend a huge amount of time with them. The main character Regan is strong heroine, but I found her unrealistic and not quite likeable. She somehow knows how to throw spears with deadly accuracy and repeatedly molests a person in a coma.
I found the writing functional at best, and typos and bad punctuation were common throughout. Other reviewers mentioned the sex scenes; I didn't find them gratuitous; I probably wouldn't even call them graphic, but rather bland and passionless, and usually coming out of nowhere with no set up. There are maybe five of them in the entire novel, including one rape scene, which was also just bland enough for me to read through disinterestedly without feeling anything even vaguely resembling shock or horror. I find the author should have omitted them altogether.
In conclusion, I liked the story, but none of the execution.
Regan's Reach is the first of a five book series, all of which are excellent. Regan Stein is a 24 year old New Zealand entrepreneur who's started a holiday to decompress after landing a lucrative contract for her company. While hiking in the mountains she finds herself called upon to help a stranger who has had a life threatening accident. A case of being in the right (or wrong) place at the right (or wrong) time. Thus begins Regan's interstellar adventure. The character is well developed and her motivations slowly change as she's exposed to a new culture in a new solar system. She manages to bootstrap humanity into space exploration as no government can.
Great book! I loved it! The last night, I couldn't put it down, and kept reading it until 4am; I had to put my alarm at 8, to wake up!
Great fantasy, plagued with intrigue, domestic and out of this world.
Hope you enjoy it, as much as I did.
I think this was a terrific beginning to a new series but more importantly a new heroine for the scifi genre. It's also refreshing to read an intelligent scifi novel without galactic space battles or alien earth invasions. Regan is by no means a genius but she's ambitious, focused, assertive and especially knows how to assemble a good team to make her dreams reality. It's laughable that some people criticize the book for graphic descriptions of sex. It's tame compared to any Game of Thrones episode. Who would have ever thought humanoids think about and engage in sex? Oops I just thought about sex. I also recommend ignoring anyone's review of the grammar and editing. I noticed few errors in comparison to other ebooks and when you're engaged in the story it's irrelevant. I'm now going to purchase book 2.
With the Renaissance of space opera that indie publishing and e-books brought about this is refreshingly different. It is space fiction with lots of action and lots of exotic technology - but not the usual rehash of space battles and Galactic empires.
In almost 60 years of reading science fiction - probably 2000 or 3000 books and at least as many stories in the Golden age of SF magazines - I haven't found a character like Ham very often. He certainly beats "Hal" of 2001 hands-down.
I wanted to wait till I had read the second book in the series as I wanted to be sure that the author can keep it up - but now, in the middle off ORBITAL ENVY I've decided to put in my five cents worth now.
There are just two characters in the book - all the others are flat, but the ideas behind the story are absolutely worth the money. So 4 Stars seem fitting...
I have the usual gripe about books of this kind - it could have done with some editing to avoid some of the more obvious misspellings, grammatical mistakes etc. but maybe we shall see this in the third book .....
Keep it up, Mark
A great Sci Fi book, the story move along a a good pace and the characters good. It is nice to read a SF book that does not have a world ending plot or monsters or alien that want to do harm to the people of earth. I am going to get the other books in the series when I find the time to read them. As for the reviewers that complain about the sex scenes, they probably don't watch prime time or even daytime TV as this book is tame to those venues. If the sex scenes bother you, just move ahead the don't take up a lot of space in the book. It's a good book and I would recommend it to anyone who like SF stories.
