K.M. Groshek has written and illustrated several books in a series, this being the first, that certainly are a welcome addition to our cannon of children's literature. They are fun, address important issues, and teach.

Bug, our hero, is a small yellow VW Beetle , and lets face it, who can resist yellow VWs? In this first adventure our little guy finds he is hungry:

There once was a bug,
a cute little sport,

His yellow-tone body,
felt quite out-of-sorts.

Detecting the problem,
he quickly amassed,

His fuel gauge was low,
he must go to get gas!

A little bit frightened,
a long way to go,

He started with pride,
"I can do this, I know."

And so Bug's adventure begins! Our little guy is faced with a perplexing world; a world that is just a bit frightening to him. There was the journey into the unknown of course but there were also these GIGANTIC trucks to contend with...not all of them nice and friendly. Will Bug be able to make it? Will he be able to overcome his fears? He is a little guy in a very, very big and unknown world; will he have the courage needed?

The author has used a VW Bug to represent the children who are reading or having this book read to them. Life is full of fears and the author uses a very soothing, yet snappy rhyming text to show the child that even though the world is a scary place, full of unknown "big mean trucks," that if only they have the courage to just take the first step, show some prudence and face their fears, then all will be well and they can accomplish about anything they want. The author pounds this fact in over and over again in a very subtle and skillful way.

Let's face it, the number one thing that keeps most of us from living up to our full potential and from not accomplishing is the fear factor; the fear of failure. I have read some very good studies on this phenomena and am pretty convinced it is true. It is only logical that the sooner we teach our children to not fall into gridlock due to their fears the better. It is works such as this that help us teach our kids this valuable lesson.

As I said, the text is done in a very nice rhyming form and goes perfectly with the illustrations.

Now as to the art work. The author/illustrator K.M. Groshek has used, for the most part, primary colors backed with gray and tan. Each picture pops from the page. I always have some trepidation as to using this very limited range of colors, but in this case the author makes it work! Each illustration is well executed, goes perfectly with the text and is...well, cute. The children being read to can and do identify with it.

This work is an excellent group read as it is quite visual and leaves the reader with many options to lead the discussion into the children's own little fears and thereby allowing the reader to give the little ones a hand.

This is a great start to what promises to be a wonderful and useful series. You would do well to check out the other books which follow the adventures of Bug. To be quite frank, you do truly get to like the little guy rather quickly.

It should be noted that the targeted group here is from 9-12 years old. In my personal opinion, I think this may be a bit high. The little ones from four on up are a lot brighter than most of us give them credit for and I see no problems in their understanding this work. As a matter of fact, I have a three year old nephew that loved this work.

First in the "Bug's Adventure Series" is the short book "Bug's Trip To The ." The book, like the series, tells the tale of Bug, a yellow Volkswagen, in his various exploits. In this case, Bug is going to the store and for good reason.

Bug has figured out that he feels out-of-sorts and that is because he needs gasoline. It is a long way to get to get gas, so he sets out being sure to obey the traffic lights and road safety rules. Along the way, he focuses on dealing with road obstacles, other traffic, and getting rid of his fear.

Despite the pressure from a semi on the interstate and other issues, Bug conquers all and safely makes it to the store. He gets his much needed gas and makes the return trip home while contemplating how he overcame all obstacles and did not let fear get in his way.

Persistence no matter how scary is the main theme of this charming book. Geared towards readers ages 4-8 it tells the tale nicely through the form of rhymes and lots of imagery featuring bright colors and details in a cartoonish format that kids will relate well to regardless of their reading ability. While some beginning readers may struggle with the word choices at times, the book is cheerful and colorful and should hold their interest while providing a nice core message that can be reinforced by adults in their lives. Unlike many children's books that come out these days, there is nothing in this book that can be taken one way by kids and another by adults.

Simply a delight, this book and the three book series (includes Bug Meets His Friend and Bug Goes Through The Maze) just make reading fun no matter what the age of the reader.

Bug's Trip to the is a children's book about facing down fear and continuing toward a goal. Aimed at older elementary school age children, this book follows a small, volkswagen- like vehicle named Bug as he heads down the road to the store, looking to fill up with gasoline to satisfy his hunger.

Bug's Trip to the , like other children's books, contains a core message. The message here deals with overcoming fear and staying the course. Children will relate to this message in different ways and it could prove very beneficial to some. For example, at one point in the book, Bug is confronted with a large truck and is worried that he may be pushed off the road. This will resonate with some kids because it will remind them of older kids and others who have possibly harassed them at school or at play. Bug feels intimidated and insecure, but he doesn't allow his fears to stop him. He continues on his way, and he is also careful to follow the rules; staying in his own lane and progressing forward.

Besides the story, this book has two other strong suits The illustrations and the rhyming. The rhyming pattern includes a rhyme every other line and this helps give the book a certain rhythm that not only holds kids attention, but also makes the reading go faster and smoother. The illustrations are another strong point. They are drawn like an animated cartoon image and other than the pictures of the big, mean semi- truck that tries to run Bug off the road, the illustrations are benign and cute.

I like the writing of this book and the way the author was able to create so many different rhyming word patterns and keep them in sync. Some of the words are a little too advanced for younger children, but they seem fine for the targeted age group. However, that doesn't mean you can't share this book with your younger children. The images are geared more toward younger kids and the rhythm will delight the ears of young elementary school and even pre- school age children.

Bug's Trip to the is a very nice children's book with creative writing, a solid message, and fun illustrations. It's a good book overall, with memorable rhyming and rhythm that hold a child's attention while he/she soaks up the illustrations and strong message. It is one in a growing series of books about Bug, the volkswagen with human characteristics, and it earns an easy recommendation.
