After reading Tamara Leigh's Dreamspell and Lisa T. Bergren's Rivers of Time time-travel series, I knew that any other Christian time-travel reads would weigh in lacking. That is only somewhat the case with Undercurrent. The difference of Griep's tale taking place in the time and setting of the Vikings made just enough difference for it to keep my attention and seem new. Of course, Vikings are Vikings, so there are some elements of the story that are, well, just Viking--Those folks are not known for their manners or morals. The #1 hero of the story (and I truly think there are 2 heroes) is a new Christian convert in his village, and, with the exception of a friend whom he has led to the Lord, he is pretty much alone in his new faith. The main character is more humorous than most in her adjustments from one time to the other, and is unrelenting in some areas. I don't think I would recommend the book for anyone younger than older teens, but it is a clean read and very entertaining.

Michelle Griep's latest novel, Undercurrent, is the adventure of forever. Ancient history lovers everywhere know ye this, you can't turn pages fast enough and your heart will ache for more when you flip the last one.

As soon as a mysterious stranger wishes Cassie a safe journey on a research trip with her students, the reader knows she'll have anything but. Pulled into the legendary sucking vortex that appears on Midsummers Eve off the coast Northumberland near Knifestone, Professor Cassandra Larson, PhD cannot escape her fate when she falls overboard.

Cassie wakes up on the other side of her life, rescued by a strange man accused of murder and running for his life. Once she deciphers his unique speech and picks up on a few other clues, the professor who specializes in ancient Norse culture realizes she has stumbled into the penultimate research project - up close and personal look at life a thousand years ago. Trouble is, she can't figure out how to get back to the 20th century. As she learns to adapt, Cassie wonders if she even wants to go back.

The lusty Alarik, product of 10th century Norway, is a prince falsely accused of killing his cousin. He must clear his name if he is to inherit rule, or become jarl, of Rogaland. Alarik's brother, the scarred Ragnar, has fallen prey to the new religion, Christianity, something even Cassie can't understand when she meets him. Cassie is soon caught up in the politics, betrayal, and dangers of the time as the brothers seek to exonerate Alarik before the ruthless and evil sorcerer Torolf can take the land by force.

Griep's unfaltering attention to every detail in her research and portrayal of the customs, lives, clothing, food, and language makes the reader live on the trails, in the villages, and at the final battle when the man who would be king makes his stand and impacts the lives of everyone around him with the depth of his conviction.

With characters such as Magnus the simple giant and Tammy the enthusiastic fan of Dr. Larson, the reader embarks upon a wondrous and magical voyage that will stay long after the story meets itself. Undercurrent gets the rare five as one of what will be an all-time favorite on my shelf.
Ostensibly a love story, this wouldn't be my usual reading, but I loved it. Well done Ms. Griep for reaching beyond your target audience. )

Undercurrent is a wonderful and alternative view of viking life. We are used to the stereotypical image of viking raiders pillaging the shores of Europe, huge and bloody battles, sour, grunting, Conan-like barbarian warriors, etc. This book is considerably more original. We see the day to day life of norsefolk in their homes and their towns, at their council meetings, their motivations, worries and hopes. Certainly the time period is rough and dirty and smelly, but Griep's norsefolk are more human, more rounded, more thoughtful. We are treated to impeccable details and descriptions, so vivid and on the money, that I could feel and breathe the atmosphere. Great job at treating us to an authentic look back at these times!

This is the story of a modern-day woman, Cassie, thrust back in time, and who subsequently falls in love with a proud viking hero. No more spoilers ) Straight away, Cassie must deal with the language barrier, and the author presents this in a very clever manner. Cassie and the norsefolk she meets misunderstand each other, and slowly she learns the language as the book progresses. At the end, Cassie still makes a hilarious language gaff during an important ceremony (no spoilers!).

A gripping murder mystery threads itself through the book. The pacing and story development is excellent, with some great surprises. Another important story arc is Griep's choice to set the book during the norse conversion to Christianity, so you have the contrast between pagan Norse mythology and Christianity. Believable and very well done.

Of course there are fight scenes - this is the viking era - but they are not cliched or gratuitous, and there is plenty at stake and oodles of tension during the final battle. The ending is extremely satisfying with loose ends tied up. A fabulous historical adventure. I very much recommend it, and can't wait for the sequel.
